The Provoked Wife, June 20-22 2014

PosterLady Brute and Sir John have been married for two years. To him, it feels like a lifetime. To her, a life sentence. But will she accept the advances of a potential lover? John Vanbrugh’s hilarious play takes a witty look at marriage, courtship and temptation. From the drunken antics of the ale-house to the heart of fashionable London, this is a production not to be missed. The Provoked Wife will run 20-22 June at 7:30pm at the Theatre, Department of Theatre, Film and Television, Heslington East Campus, University of York.

Tickets are priced at £10, £5 concessions (student, 60+) and are available via the University of York Store. (Purchased tickets can be collected on the door at the performance).

The Stage is a glass for the world to view itself in.  People ought to see themselves as they are.  If it makes their faces too fair, they won’t know they are dirty, and by consequence will neglect to wash them.

– John Vanbrugh, A Short Vindication of ‘The Relapse’ and ‘The Provoked Wife’ from Immorality and Profaneness
